  • He was common-law married to Julia Chinn, a woman he enslaved. He never freed her, but they did seem to be a family. He made sure their daughters received a superior education. And she ran his business while he was away.

  • She died four years before he was VP.

  • I thought he was very progressive and ahead of his time … but his relationships after her death seem shadier.
